Auto Repair Benefits
During this recession, people are holding out on upgrading or trading in their cars, because they do not want to get further into debt. Many people are getting their cars fixed, rather than buying new. This is a good idea if you have a later model car with low miles. At some point, it becomes a bad idea to keep your car running. Buying a different car becomes essential, whether it is used or new. In spite of this economy, if you have a clunker that just needs to die, then let it.
When it is Time to Let Go
When do you let go of your old clunker? This may depend on the car and the owner, but here are some basic signs that you should let go now. When it strands you somewhere at least three times, this is the first sign. Said another way, if it refuses to start no matter how much you work at it and you have to call a cab to take you home. Let it go if this happens at least three times.
Should your muffler come off while you are driving, this is the next sign. This is a very bad sign. There was a gas station that I stopped at once while on a trip with a different trip. Inside, there was a bumper sticker that said, “Honk if parts fall off”. Let it go if this describes your car.
Let go of your clunker if you are adding oil every day. You may have an oil leak or the car is burning it up too fast. Either way, you must get rid of it.
As you are driving down the highway and the tire comes off, this should be the last sign to get rid of it. You may want to hope there is snow available if a fire breaks out because of this. Either the bolts were too loose or the rod broke. If the latter happened, there is no way this can be fixed.
What to Buy
So, you have decided that you need to buy a different car and let your old clunker die. This is a good idea, because you will only end up repairing more and more things on it. New cars do not have to be bought though. Late model used cars that are decent can be found at many dealerships. A new car can cost as much as twice the amount of a decent used car. Later, that nice new car could cost you much more money than you thought it would. A late model car can cost roughly half the cost of a new car. The benefits include getting a warranty of some sort and little to no problems those first few years.
Last Word
Whether you have decided to get rid of the old car or make repairs on it, the main point to remember is to do what is best for you. You know your car better than me, and if you think you can keep it going longer, have fun with it. If you cannot fix the old one, be sure that you can afford to buy another car. You could even wait until you have enough money saved up to buy a car outright while limping the old car along. Good luck with that, and make sure you have the taxi company’s phone number on your cell phone!
