The BMW Alloy Wheel Vibration

If you intend fit alloy wheels to a BMW E34 5 series some problems can be encountered if care is not taken. When fitting any type of non standard alloy wheels which you can buy from accessory shops, vibration may occur when you travel over 60 miles per hour. You might also incur this vibration through braking which sort of throws a spanner in the works if you thought it was only just a balancing problem. First if the fault seems to appear under the acceleration and approximately the fifty to sixty mark, people can incline to reckon it is the balancing of the wheels.
On personal experience I have had the tyres balanced and rebalanced several times with thinking there is a little improvement each time, but then the fault seemed to come back after a day or so. As the fault also occurred when the car was under braking, I was led to believe that the fault lay in the brake discs being warped and eventually had these changed when the MOT was due. However after changing the discs and the pads the vibration was still there coming and going some what.
It was then said that the result in the problem could have been the anti roll bushes or the track control arm. So I decided to replace both items. The following thing tried was checking to see if the wheels might be buckled and I also changed the back for the front wheels and visa versa, but with no better results.
The aftermarket BMW 5 series E39 alloy wheels today are said by the suppliers that they are suited for the E39 as well as the E34 model. On inspection you will discover the hubs on the E34 models are alot smaller than the E39 model, meaning that the shims supplied with the wheels are not much cop. I have tried three different styles of wheels on my BMW E34 with the same vibration problem , one was the MV style type 1 BMW wheels. I also tried the TSW Vipor style wheels which gave the same fault and the opted for some AC Schnitzer replica wheels in the end. When fitting 18 inch style wheels would the problem really show.<_p_>
Then by chance I was looking through EBay and I came across some metal shims which are designed especially for the BMW E34 to stop this vibration problem. With these shims fitted the vibration stopped. If you are experiencing the same woes, it may be worth you taking a look on eBay yourself to find some.
